Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Mooney Wins Late to Lift Men's Tennis

BRYN ATHYN, Pa.– Connor Mooney earned a 6-1, 6-4 win at third singles to secure the decisive fifth point and lift Eastern University Men's Tennis to a 5-4 win at Bryn Athyn College. Mooney combined with Matt Cradduck to win at second doubles as well.

The Eagles won at first and second doubles to lead 2-1 going into the singles matches, but Bryn Athyn picked up a 6-4, 7-5 win in a tremendous match at first singles and earned wins at fifth and sixth singles to put the pressure on Mooney at the third spot.

Cradduck had already done his part when he rallied back after dropping his opening set to claim a 1-6, 6-1, (10-7) win in a super-tiebreaker. Head Coach Mark Spangler was pleased with Cradduck's play as the match went on, noting that the junior served tough and hit some big shots at the net in big moments.

Karl Finkbeiner controlled his match and won 6-2, 6-3.

Mooney won his opening set by a 6-1 score that did not indicate how close the match was. With several long rallies, and games played to deuce, the junior came up with big shots when needed and was able to move his opponent effectively to earn key points. He then ground out a 6-4 win in the second set to secure the match.

"It was good to see Matt and Connor step up," Head Coach Mark Spangler said after the match. "Ryan [Hamilton] had a great match against a player who made some really good shots down the stretch, and we got the wins at two, three and four. It also shows how important winning the doubles can be."

The Eagles will have a day to practice before traveling to Immaculata for another non-league match on Wednesday.
