Volleyball Splits on Final Day at Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa.– Eastern University Volleyball beat the No. 25 Johns Hopkins Blue Jays in three sets to salvage a split at on the final day at the Wid Guisler Tournament hosted by Juniata College. Michelle Paulsen and Sarah Roberts each earned spots on the All-Tournament team.

How It Happened:
Eastern trailed 22-20 in the opening set against the Blue Jays before Caroline Shelby followed up a sideout with three points on serve to change the momentum of the set. Sammy Rogers delivered the final kill to put the Eagles up 1-0 with a 25-23 win.

Eastern never trailed int he second set, but needed a late  run on with Lindsey Heisey and Paulsen serving to build a comfortable lead. The Eagles scored seven of eight points to go up 22-15. Though the Blue Jays (17-6) rallied, the Eagles were able to take a 2-0 lead with a 25-20 win in the set.

The Eagles (20-5) scored eight of the final ten points of the match to pick up their 20th win of the season. Caroline Shelby had three aces in the final set and the Eagles held Hopkins to .071 hitting in the frame.

Roberts led the Eagles with eight kills in the match. Shelby and Rogers each had seven. Cecilia Bauer finished with 15 digs.

Eastern dropped the opening match of the day to the University of Mary Washington Eagles. Mary Washington hit .427 for the match. Roberts led the Eagles with eight kills.

Coach Birtwistle Says:
"[It was] nice to end the weekend on a positive note and come back to play a solid match with Hopkins. Our passing finally returned and we were able to put some pressure on the Hopkins defense. Our defense made a few adjustments  and came up with some timely stops and kept their big pin hitters at bay.  Michelle and Sarah played well against outstanding competition all weekend. Congrats to them for making All-Tournament."

Up Next:
The Eagles finish up the MAC Freedom Schedule at FDU-Florham on Wednesday. With a win at FDU, the Eagles can secure a home match in the opening round of the MAC Freedom Tournament. Eastern will host three teams this weekend in a second home invitational this coming weekend. The Eagles will play York on Friday night.
