ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Volleyball snapped a four-game skid with a a pair of three-set home wins. The Eagles (11-8) hit .343 in an early morning win over Rowan University and were nearly flawless through two sets in an efficient win over Messiah College.
The Eagles built 13-7 first-set lead over the Profs and held that lead to a 25-19 win in the first set.
Caroline Shelby had four of her match-high 14 kills to lead an Eastern attack that took advantage of eight Rowan hitting errors in the first.
Eastern put away 20 kills in a 26-24 win in the second set.
Ally Spillane had five kills and Shelby had six as the Eagles hit .326 in the set. Rowan (9-9) put the home side to the test in the frame with 14 kills and only three errors. Eastern closed out the set with consecutive kills from Spillane and
Michelle Paulsen.
Eastern allowed Rowan to score only one point on serve in the third set. With the efficient serve-receive and aggressive serving, the Eagles pulled away to a 25-14 win in the final set.
Spillane finished with 12 kills and three aces.
Miranda Kauffman led Eastern with 15 digs and
Morgan Kline had 39 assists.
Eastern's effectiveness in serve-receive continued into the team's second match of the afternoon. The Messiah College Falcons did not score a point on serve until the third set. The Eagles had 15 kills on 34 attacks in a 25-12 first set win.
Spillane led the way with seven of her 13 kills in the opening frame.
Eastern was almost impressive on attack in a 25-8 second set, and the Eagles found some added effectiveness at the net. Paulsen had three blocks in the frame and Eastern held Messiah to -.167 hitting.
"It was a combination of good passing and first swing-sideout in the first two sets," Head Coach
Mark Birtwistle said of his team's efficiency. "We executed our defensive strategy really well in the second set particularly."
Messiah finally scored on serve to go up 5-3 in the third set, and the two teams traded points until the Falcons led 20-18. After a Messiah service error,
Cecilia Bauer went back to serve for Eastern. Spillane put away two kills to put Eastern up, and Kline and Paulsen combined on another block for a two-point edge.
The Eagles went up three after a Messiah error, but the Falcons scored four-of-five points coming out of a timeout to tie the match at 24-24. The two teams traded points before Eastern closed out the match on kills by Shelby and
Sarah Roberts.
Shelby had 15 kills and Spillane had 13 kills and two aces. Kline finished with 34 assists.
Rowan beat Messiah in four sets in the noon match at Eastern.
The Eagles are at Manhattanville College on Tuesday.
