Field Hockey Falls at Stockton

GALLOWAY, N.J.– Eastern University Field Hockey dropped a tough 3-1 decision at Stockton University. The host Ospreys scored twice in the final 15 minutes to pull away late.

Stockton struck first. In the 26th minute, Jaquie Fenton scored the first of her two goals on the afternoon on a loose ball in the circle. The Eagles equalized on a Maya Wales tally in the 32nd minute. Wales redirected a Gina Miller blast around the Stockton goalie for her third tally of the year.

Eastern had a 4-3 edge in first-half shots and both teams had three penalty corners in the opening 35 minutes.

Wales hit the post on another redirection in the 46th minute and the Eagles had consecutive penalty corners, but the game remained knotted at a goal apiece. Eastern continued to force the action and had another corner before Alison Hoag hit yet another post.

"We were really encouraged by what we saw on our attack," Head Coach Camrin Azzarano said after the game. "It was sweltering on the field, and the heat took a lot out of everyone. Even with the heat, we were able to move the ball and eliminate multiple defenders with passes."

Having weathered the storm, the Ospreys began to work on the attack. Fenton put her team up in the 58th minute on a rebound of her own shot on a penalty corner. Stockton scored once more in the 67th minute.

"We had some people play really well today." Azzarano said, "Lexi [Alexis Gooch] was tremendous on defense and Shannon Jugler did very well in a couple different spots. We will continue to keep working, but I think there was a lot to be encouraged about today."

The Eagles are back in action against Arcadia on Monday.
