WILKES-BARRE– Eastern University Men's Soccer controlled much of the game, but the host Wilkes University Colonels held their ground and found a 110th minute game winner to claim a 1-0 MAC Freedom wIn.
Eastern (11-4, 4-2 MAC Freedom) had a 13-2 edge in shots through the first half and increased that margin to 22-6 through the end of regulation, but Wilkes goalkeeper Tim Gallagher made eight saves to keep the Eagles off the board through 90 minutes.
Quentin Keibler picked up three saves as the Eagles had to contend with the counter-attack.
Eastern continued the pressure through first overtime with three more shots, but the hosts became increasingly dangerous in transition against the Eagles' pressure. That danger created a trio of corner kick opportunities in the second overtime.
The Eagles fought off the first two and moved up-field for more attacking. A turnover in the midfield gave the Colonels a breakout chance in the 109th minute. Keibler made a brilliant stop on the shot, but his parry around the post gave the Colonels their sixth corner of the match and third of the second overtime.
A good serve to the back post and a re-serve with a header put Wilkes in a position to win the match with a header from six yards out. Alvaro
Fernandez-Maldona converted to give the home side the win with 52 seconds on the clock.
Eastern won the previous seven meetings between the two teams. The loss adds some significance to what was already going to be a meaningful regular-season finale against DeSales next Saturday. The Eagles could claim the top seed with a win, but could fall to a third seed with a loss or tie.
