GALLOWAY, N.J. - Eastern University volleyball fell to nationally ranked No. 22 University of Mary Washington 3-1 on Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Stockton University Tournament.
Mary Washington (14-1) took the first two sets by the same scores of 25-21. The Eagles (14-1) combined for 20 kills in the opening two sets but were out-hit by the Eagles of Mary Washington who posted hitting percentages of .105 and .206 in each set respectively.
Eastern battled back to claim the third set by the final score of 25-19. The Eagles totaled 12 kills in the set and held Mary Washington to a hitting percentage of -.026.
Eastern raced out to a 6-2 lead early in the third behind two kills by
Stephanie Elechko. However, the Eagles of Mary Washington battled back to take a 16-15 lead midway through the set. A kill by
Morgan Shemonski sparked a 4-1 run by the Eagles retaking a 19-17 advantage. The Eagles another run this time a 5-1 run to close out the set behind two kills from Elechko and a service ace by
Rylie Haas.
Mary Washington closed out the match in the following set defeating the Eagles 25-19. The Eagles of Mary Washington used seven multi-point runs including three runs of three or more points to claim the victory. Eastern recorded more kills than Mary Washington in the fourth and final set 12-10 but were out-hit .152-.116.
Overall, Eastern recorded 44 kills in the match with Elechko leading the team with 16 of her own.
Michelle Paulsen led the Eagles defense with 11 blocks while Shemonski totaled eight. Haas recorded 22 digs to lead Eastern.
The Eagles will travel to DeSales University on September 28th for a 7 p.m. match. It will be a rematch of last season's MAC Freedom Final in which Eastern defeated the Bulldogs 3-0.
