Field Hockey Drops MAC Freedom Opener

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Eastern University field hockey lost to host King's College 3-0 on Friday night. Nicole Berger tallied ten saves in the contest for her sixth game with double-digit saves.

Eastern (1-6, 0-1 MAC Freedom) had an opportunity early in the game to take the lead but were unable to capitalize. The Eagles earned a penalty corner, and Ali Balmer stepped up to take it. Balmer played a nice ball toward the top of the arc, but Kalyn Detweiler saw her shot blocked by the King's (6-3, 1-0 MAC Freedom) defense to keep the score level at 0-0.

The Lady Monarchs had three chances later in the half but were denied each time. In the fifth minute, King's had two chances less than 50 seconds apart, but Berger tallied back-to-back saves to keep the score level. Then, in the eighth minute the Lady Monarchs had another attempt but ricocheted a shot off the post leaving the game scoreless.

However, King's finally broke through in the 12th minute. King's had a two on one opportunity tipping in the pass across the net to take the 1-0 lead.

The Lady Monarchs wasted no time getting their second goal of the game in the 43rd minute to stretch the lead to 2-0. King's netted the third and final goal of the game in the 57th-minute finishing off a loose ball in front of the net to make the score final at 3-0.

Overall, the Lady Monarchs totaled 19 shots with 14 on net while Eastern totaled four with one on net. The Eagles held the edge on penalty corners 10-9.

Eastern will return home to host Elizabethtown College on September 28th at 4:30 p.m.
