DALLAS, Pa. - Eastern University women's volleyball defeated Misericordia 3-0 on Tuesday night. The Eagles posted a team hitting percentage of .466 while holding the Cougars to a negative percentage to earn the victory.
In the first set Eastern (12-0, 2-0 MAC Freedom) used eight multi-point runs to cruise to a 25-10 victory. As a team, the Eagles hit .360 totaling ten kills while committing only one error. The Eastern defense held Misericordia (6-6, 1-1 MAC Freedom) to a percentage of -.231. Holding a slim 5-4 advantage, the Eagles used an 11-2 run to stretch its lead to 16-6 behind two kills apiece from
Morgan Shemonski and
Stephanie Elechko during the run.
Eastern dominated the second set cruising to a 25-4 victory over the Cougars. The Eagles hit an outstanding .636, totaling 14 kills, while holding Misericordia to a hitting percentage of -.304. Eastern jumped out to a 16-0 lead behind five kills from Elechko and nine overall as a team. After the Cougars scored four points to make the score 20-4 the Eagles tallied the final five points of the set with Elechko tallying four of them to give Eastern the 2-0 advantage.
The third set was no contest as Eastern rolled to a 25-13 victory. After an initial 1-1 tie, the Eagles tallied seven consecutive points and used an overall 8-2 run to take a 9-3 advantage. After the Cougars battled back to pull within four at 13-9 Eastern went on a 9-1 run to extend its lead to 22-10.
Michelle Paulsen recorded two kills and ace during the scoring run to help blow the match open and deliver the eventual victory.
Elechko led the team with 14 kills while posting a hitting percentage of .519.
Morgan Kline tallied a team-high 14 assists while
Giana Cirulli finished second on the team with 11.
Cecilia Bauer finished the match with a team-best and match-high four aces.
Eastern will travel to Stockton University to take part in the Stockton University Tournament Sept. 24th and 25th. The Eagles will take on Stockton University in their first match of the tournament at 10 a.m. on Saturday. This will be a rematch of last season's second round NCAA Tournament match that saw the Ospreys win 3-2.
