KINGSTON, Pa. - Eastern Baseball took the first game of a three-game series against Wilkes University Friday afternoon by the final score of 10-6. The Eagles used a three-run third inning to take an early lead and a four-run ninth inning to secure the win.
After two scoreless innings, Eastern (4-6-2) found some offensive rhythm in the third to take a 3-0 lead. Afte the first two batters recorded outs the Eagles came to life.
Timmy Gorton earned a walk giving Eastern its third baserunner of the game.
Joe Grato then singled followed by a
Joseph De Los Santos walk to load the bases for
Andrew Boykin. Boykin singled to center field scoring all three players to give the Eagles the 3-0 lead.
Eastern tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth inning. After
Angelo Kelly had singled to lead off the inning, Gorton doubled the very next at-bat to drive in Kelly and make it 4-0. A De Los Santo singled two batters later to score Gorton stretching the Eagles lead to 5-0.
Kelly scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh to stretch the Eagles lead to 6-1. Wilkes (7-5), however, came roaring back in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Eastern deficit to just two. After the first two batters of the inning recorded outs a walk followed by a single gave the Colonels two base runners. A home run the very next at-bat by Joe Champi made it a 6-4 game heading into the final two innings of play.
In the top of the ninth inning, the first four batters all reached safely loading the bases for De Los Santos. De Los Santos sealed the win for the Eagles launching a grand slam to left field to make the score final at 10-4.
De Los Santos finished the day 2-3 with five RBI's and scoring two runs. Boykin went 2-4 with three RBI's while
Anthony Vlahovic earned the win going six innings, giving up only four hits, and recording one strikeout.
Eastern hosts Wilkes on March 19th for a doubleheader.
