Men's Lacrosse Falls Short Against Sewanee

HAVERFORD, Pa. - Eastern Men's Lacrosse dropped a tough 6-5 decision to Sewanee: The University of the South on Wednesday afternoon at the Haverford School. The Eagles fought back from an early deficit plus a lightning delay but in the end, just couldn't get over the hump and pull out the win.

The Tigers (4-3) jumped out to an early 3-0 led in the first quarter. Hayden Hunt tallied two goals just over a minute apart from each other to give Sewanee the early 2-0 advantage. Robbie Berndt stretched the Tigers lead to 3-0 with just over eight minutes left in the opening quarter when he found the back of the net.

Eastern (2-4) started to find its offensive stride late in the first quarter, however. With just under three minutes left to play, Jake Billera got Eastern on the scoreboard when he netted an unassisted goal to make it 3-1. Jake Pousson then tallied the only goals of the second quarter scoring twice to pull the Eagles even at 3-3 with just under a minute and a half to go.

Right after Pousson's second goal, however, the game was delayed due to a storm that blew through. The delay lasted about 40 minutes giving each team plenty of time to regroup and rest up before retaking the field.

Sewanee earned a man-up opportunity to start the third quarter after an Eastern penalty on the final play of the second quarter. Brooks Young capitalized on the man advantage for the Tigers and stretched the lead to 4-3 with just over 14 minutes left to go in the third. Another Sewanee goal late in the third quarter gave the Tigers a two-goal cushion at 5-3.

Billera pulled the Eagles back within one after he tallied his second goal of the game with just over a minute to play in the third to make it 5-4. After another Tigers goal this time in the fourth, Mark Buannic answered right back capitalizing off a Desmond Decker pass to make it a 6-5 game with exactly six minutes left to play in the game.

The Eagles had a few chances late in the game but were unable to convert. Decker had a great look on goal with just over three and a half minutes left to play, but his shot was saved by Selby Austin. Eastern had one more chance with just over a minute to play, but the Tigers defense stripped Pousson of the ball and were able to run out the clock and secure the win.

Billera and Pousson each tallied two goals to lead the Eagles while Jameal Hadeed finished the game with ten saves.

Hunt finished the day as Sewanee's leading scorer with three goals while Austin recorded 12 saves on the day.

Eastern hosts Illinois Wesleyan on March 19th at 2 pm.
