Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Drops Home-Opener to Neumann

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Basketball battled back from an 11-point first-half deficit to take the lead in the second half, but the visiting Neumann College Knights took advantage of 16 second-half turnovers to pull away to a 106-90 win. Led by 20 points from Shaquan Turk, four Eastern players finished in double-figures. Neumann's Deshawn Lowman led all scorers with 28 points.

Neumann started the game on an 18-8 run as the Eagles made only two field goals over the first seven and a half minutes of the contest. The Eastern offense came to life as Austin Duncan, Austin James, and Lincoln Holley each made multiple baskets in a 22-7 run. Anthony Concepcion capped the run with eight minutes left in the half with a long 3-pointer off a good screen at the top of the key by Holley. The 30-25 lead, however, was short-lived. The Neumann offense, which had already reached the century mark in the season opener, started to reduce turnovers and make shots. The Knights tied the game at 30-30, and the two teams flew up-and-down the court trading baskets.

Turk tied the game at 48-48 with a dunk over a Neumann defender in transition, but the Knights scored a 3-pointer to take a 51-48 lead into the break. Neumann made 7-of-17 from behind the arc and shot 52.9 percent from the floor in the first half. The Eagles connected on 6-of-13 from behind the arc. Turk had 11, and Austin Duncan had 10 to lead the Eagles in scoring.

Led by a pair of hoops from Victor Peña, Eastern started the second half on a 6-2 run. Neumann then answered with a 9-0 run in four possessions. The Eagles took two jumpers and had two turnovers, and the Knights had two layups, a dunk, and three made free throws. The Eagles briefly cut into the lead, but the Knights again pulled away with solid shooting and a gambling defense. Eastern made only 3-of-15 from behind the arc in the second half and had twice as many turnovers (16) as assists (8).

Peña gathered seven defensive rebounds in the second half, and the Eagles gathered 15 of the possible 17 defensive rebounds, but the Knights shot 17-of-24 from the foul line and were able to get quality opportunities in transition. Duncan and James each had 17 points in the contest. Peña had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. The Knights put six players in double-figures. Only one Neumann player who scored missed more shots than he made.

The Eagles will host Albright College on Tuesday evening at 7 pm. That time is adjusted from what was previously published.
