Volleyball Tops Lycoming on Senior Night

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Before this evening's game against the visiting Lycoming College Warriors, Eastern University Volleyball celebrated the careers of the three seniors in the program. After a little bit of slow start, the No. 13 Eagles (25-5) found their offensive rhythm and won in four sets.

Eastern won the first set 25-20. The Eagles put away an impressive 16 kills but also made eight errors. Morgan Shemonski, however, was perfect with five kills on five swings in the first set. The junior right side found the floor with her first seven attacks of the night and would finish the night with ten kills and an impressive .471 hitting percentage.

Lycoming served aggressively and hit .323 in the to take the second set 25-21. The Eagles hit .250 in the frame, but the team struggled to put together a run to overcome an early deficit.

"We struggled with our passing in the second set," Head Coach Mark Birtwistle said after the match. "Once we got our passing going, we were able to cut down on errors and put them under more pressure."

As the Eagles found their passing rhythm in the third set, they also began to serve more aggressively. Eastern had five aces in a 25-16 third-set win. The visiting Warriors (14-18) had several other points where they were never able to get in system. The Eastern defense had four blocks, and the Warriors had several other hitting errors under the pressure of the Eastern attack.

It all came together for the Eagles in the fourth set. Eastern hit .526 and held the Warriors to a negative hitting percentage. Stephanie Elechko had six of her match-high 18 kills in the fourth. Fellow Senior Alicia Weigel had three of her 11 kills in the final set. She also delivered a pair of aces as the Eagles continued to put the visitors on the defensive with more aggressive serving and won the set, 25-9.

Rylie Haas, the third senior recognized, recorded a team-best 14 digs. She is Eastern's career leader with 2,372 digs. She is the only player in program history with over 2,000 digs. Elechko has 1254 career kills. Weigel has 921 kills and over 500 digs.

Michelle Paulsen finished with another six blocks to lift her season total to 150. She is now two blocks shy of the single-season mark set by Kate Adams in 2002.

Eastern will host a full day of volleyball tomorrow. The Eagles will play Muhlenberg College at 10 AM and Hunter College at 4 PM.
