St. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Women's Soccer dropped a tough 1-0 decision to the visiting Wilkes University Colonels. The Colonels scored the only goal of the match in the 83rd minute.
The Eagles had a slim edge in chances in an evenly played first half. Eastern's best chance of the first half came on an indirect kick inside the box.
Alondra Cervantes struck her shot well, but it tailed just wide of the goal. Wilkes had four corners and a pair of dangerous restarts in the first half as well.
The second half continued to be mostly in the midfield. The Eagles looked to have a good chance in the 69th minute, but Wilkes' goalkeeper Alyssa Young stopped
Emma Daly's header from close range.
The Colonels found the game-winner following a corner kick.
Leah Lozzi saved the hard inswung corner and Cervantes cleared the ball from immediate danger, but Dianna Conner won the clear and played it to Micaela Oliverio. Oliverio returned the pass and Connor put a shot just under the crossbar.
The Eagles (7-9, 2-3 MAC Freedom) had restart chances late, but the Colonels were able to fight off a pair of free kicks and a corner to preserve the win.
"This was a very tough one for us," Head Coach
Dan Mouw said after the match. "Games like this often come down to one play. They made the play they need to make to win. We battled, but came up short."
The Eagles host King's College at noon on Saturday.
