Men's Basketball Edges FDU-Florham 82-79

Box Score

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--Eastern University Men's Basketball edged the FDU-Florham Devils 82-79 on Saturday afternoon behind four players who scored double digits.

Malcolm Garrison scored a team-high 19 points in the win, making all five of his field goals from long-range (5-for-7). Sophomore Shaquan Turk shot 6-for-12 from the floor to finish with 16 points. He came one rebound shy of a double-double, snagging nine defensive rebounds.

Tarek Hamzeh connected on 4-of-8 3-pointers and finished with 15 points. Austin Carroll went 5-for-9 from the floor and 5-for-9 from the free-throw line to contribute 15 points as well. Carroll, who also had 15 assists, came off the bench and ended up playing more minutes than anyone, 33.

With the win, Eastern improved to 5-5 in the Freedom Conference and moved into a three-way tie for fourth place in the league.

Eastern shot well in both halves and went 51 percent from the floor overall and an even 50 percent from the 3-point line. The Eagles didn't have their strongest day from the free-throw line, hitting 64.5 percent of their shots (20-for-31), but the Devils were worse, only going 10-for-23 (43.5 percent) from the stripe.

For as close as the score was at the end, there were only two lead changes in the entire game and those changes represented dramatic shifts in momentum.

The Eagles started the game on a roll, jumping to a 15-3 lead in the first five minutes. However, FDU-Florham chipped away and caught Eastern at 25-25 with 6:33 to go after back-to-back layups by Veon Lassiter.

A 3-pointer by Anthony Concepcion gave the Eagles some breathing room on the Eagles' next possession, but the Devils concocted an 8-0 run on a Kevin Furlong layup and two 3-pointers by Steve Herdman to take their first lead of the game. FDU-Florham's lead reached 41-33 with 1:23 to go in the half, but Hamzeh knocked down another 3-pointer from the corner and Austin James finished a drive to the basket with a layup to pull Eastern within three points with 40 seconds to go. Eastern forced an FDU turnover and had a chance to tie before halftime, but Hamzeh's 3-pointer missed and FDU's Ryan Rigby snuck in a layup just before the buzzer leaving Eastern down by five points at halftime.

The game seemed to be unraveling for the Eagles as FDU-Florham's lead reached 10 with 17:48 left in the half. The Eagles proved on Wednesday at Wilkes that a double-digit deficit was something they could overcome. Carroll knocked down a mid-range jumper on the Eagles' next possession that sparked a 9-0 Eastern run. A Carroll layup with 12:51 to go finally evened the score at 54-54. Anthony Parenti knocked down two free throws on the next possession that put Eastern up 56-54 and ended up giving them the lead for good.

The Devils, however, hung around and stayed within seven points of the Eagles the rest of the way. The Eagles held a six-point lead after a Garrison free throw with 41 seconds left. With the Devils forced to foul to stop the clock, the Eagles hit 4-of-6 free throws in the final 30 seconds to secure the win.

Eastern battles one of the other conference bubble teams on the road on Wednesday. The Eagles travel to King's College for an 8 p.m. start.
