Men's Basketball Falls In OT

Box Score

PURCHASE, N.Y.--After erasing a 14-point Manhattanville College lead in the first half, Eastern University Men's Basketball saw its own 13-point lead evaporate in the second half on Saturday. The Manhattanville Valiants caught the Eastern Eagles with 21 seconds left in regulation to force overtime and then ran away with a 93-86 win.

The loss for the Eagles came in spite of 57 combined points by Shaquan Turk and Malcolm Garrison. Turk netted a career-high 37 points on 13-of-27 shooting from the floor and 11-of-12 shooting from the free-throw line.

Garrison scored his 20 while going 4-for-8 from the 3-point line and 7-for-17 overall. The duo heated up in the second half, going 13-for-20 and 7-for-7 from the line. The Eagles shot 56.7 percent from the floor in the second period, but the Valiants were even hotter at 60.7 percent.

Anthony Parenti added 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and contributed six assists, five rebounds, five steals and two blocks.

Manhattanville pulled to a 30-16 lead 12 minutes in. The Eagles shook off their early stupor and, sparked by a Garrison layup, rattled off a 12-0 run over the next four minutes. The Eagles finally caught the Valiants at 32-32 with 1:25 to go after Parenti made a steal and then finished with a fastbreak layup on the other end.

Eastern began to pull away five minutes into the half. Turk scored 11 straight points for the Eagles including an alley-oop dunk set up by a nice pass by Austin Carroll and then a dunk in traffic in the middle of the paint.

Garrison then hit three 3-pointers consecutively and Eastern's lead reached its peak of 13 points with 7:55 remaining.

Manhattanville chipped away at Eastern's lead, but the Eagles still led by six with 1:16 to go. Manhattanville's Anthony Maestre then knocked down a 3-pointer to cut the lead in half. Garrison and Turk missed on the other end and Manhattanville collected the defensive board with 28 seconds left. Maestre, who led the Valiants with 21 points, then evened the score at 78-78 with 21 seconds left on another trey. The Eagles had one last chance for the go-ahead basket. Turk drove hard to the rack, drawing multiple defenders and contact, but the shot rolled off the rim and out.

In overtime, the Eagles were a cold 2-for-10 from the floor while the Valiants went 3-for-4 overall and 8-for-10 from the line. Manhattanville reached a seven-point lead two minutes into overtime and kept the Eagles at arm's length the rest of the way.

Eastern (9-14, 5-7 Freedom) hosts Misericordia on Tuesday at 8 p.m. The Eagles will honor their lone senior Anthony Parenti before the game.
