Eagles Sweep MAC Crossover

St. Davids, Pa. - The Eastern University Volleyball team hosted the MAC Crossover today and continued their winning ways as they beat back the visiting Mustangs of Stevenson University 3-0. Followed up by another 3-0 win over the Dutchman of Lebanon Valley College to finish with a 2-0 record on the day.

Other than a slow start in the first set of the first match against the Mustangs the Eagles controlled the match. Set two was the real story of this match in which the Eagle dominated the Mustangs from start to finish wining 25-11. As a team Eastern hit for .393 and totaled 12 kills in that second set alone.

Overall in this match the Eagles tallied 39 kills, five aces, five blocks, 32 assists, and 43 digs. Individual standouts for the Eagles in this match were Michelle Paulsen who recorded 4 blocks, Stephanie Elechko with 10 blocks, and Rylie Haas who totaled 10 digs.

Head Coach Mark Birtwistle did have the following to say about the match "Stevenson is a solid team that does a lot of things well. We had to serve them tough to keep their hitting options to a minimum. Some quality serving to the right people gave us an advantage  to earn our points while in defense. "

In the second match of the day Eastern took on Lebanon Valley College, who had just come off a 4 set win over DeSales.

It was a little more of a back and forth match than the first one with the Dutchman keeping it close the whole way. The Eagles did manage to sweep 3-0 with scores of 25-22, 25-26, and 25-20.

Once again it was the second set the did in the Eagles opponent. As a team the Eagles hit .400 in that set alone and kep their opposition to a .172 average.

The big individual performances of this match went to Rylie Haas who had 11 digs while Miranda Kauffman had 12. Stephanie Elechko continued her dominate performance from the first match and notched 15 kills. And last but not least Rikki Schlager who totaled 38 assists.

Coach Birtwistle kept his message simple to his players telling them "to do what we do well... do the simple things right and play to our strengths. Find the match ups we want."

The win moved Eastern to 18-3 overall. They will travel to Purchase, NY on Tuesday October 6th for a 7PM contest against the Valiants of Manhattanville.
