Box Score 2 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 9 Eastern University Eagles lost their final two matches at the Midwest Invitational hosted by Calvin College. The Eagles fell to No. 13 Hope College in five sets and then fell to fifth ranked Calvin in three.
In the morning match, Eastern (20-6) took the opening set 25-22. Six different Eastern players recorded kills in the opening set.
Hope (17-5) took the next two sets 25-17 and 25-22. Eastern grabbed a 12-5 lead in the fourth set. The Eagles held that lead despite two scoring runs by Hope. Eastern scored four of the last five points to force the decisive fifth set.
Hope grabbed the lead early in the fifth set and won the sideout battle to close out the match.
Erin Hillman led the Eastern attack with a very efficient 11 kills.
Rylie Haas recorded 20 digs to lead the Eastern defense.
Calvin's efficient attack put the Eagles under pressure from the start. The Knights (21-3) led for most of the first set. A pair of service aces from
Lauren Horst sparked a three point run to cut the deficit to a single point at 15-14, but the host Knights pulled away to a 25-19 win in the opening set.
Eastern held a a lead midway through the second, but Calvin rattled off seven straight points to grab control of the set. The Knights took the second set 25-16.
Eastern used a five point run to tie the third set at 18, but Calvin scored seven of the last 11 points to close out the match 25-22.
Alicia Weigel tallied 10 kills to lead the Eastern attack.
The Eagles play at Wilkes University on Tuesday.
