Women's Soccer Nipped by DeSales

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern Women's Soccer fell to visiting DeSales University 2-0. The Bulldogs scored goals late in both periods.

Both teams had chances early on in the match but were unable to capitalize. Eastern (6-8-1, 2-2 MAC Freedom) had the first opportunity of the match in the third minute. Emily Cole found her way into the space between the two DeSales central defenders and hit a shot from the top of the box that drifted inches wide. A Caroline Lozzi corner kick in the 14th minute resulted in a  Katy Laurie Laurie shot on goal. Moments later DeSales forward Angelica Bertola ripped a shot off the underside of the crossbar.

DeSales (10-4, 4-0 MAC Freedom)  managed to break through in the 42nd minute. In a transition moment, Gabby Lucchese played a pass around Eastern goalkeeper Adrianna Swinehart and into the path of Bertola just a few yards from the goal. Bertola converted for a 1-0 lead.

"We need to finish the half stronger," Head Coach Dan Mouw said of the goal. " We had five or six players who could have made ordinary plays to have prevented that first goal. It is frustrating to see our good effort of the first 40 minutes undone by a breakdown like that."

Cole had a great chance to level the match in the 71st minute when she outdueled her mark on a corner kick. The junior forward hit a powerful header, but it was right at the DeSales goalkeeper.

DeSales put the game out of reach in the 85th minute. Lucchese scored on a rebound. With the win, the Bulldogs secured a spot in the MAC Freedom Playoffs.

The Eagles remain in third place in the MAC Freedom but have three important games on the horizon.

Eastern plays at Wilkes on Tuesday at 4:30.
