ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Eastern Women's Volleyball overcame some early sluggishness to beat FDU-Florham in three sets. The Eagles stretched their conference winning streak and secured a playoff berth with the win.
FDU-Florham (19-7, 3-2 MAC Freedom) used precise hitting and a series of Eastern errors to take a 14-10 lead. Eastern chipped away at the FDU-Florham lead.
Alicia Weigel tallied two kills and a combined block in a critical a five-point run. The junior outside hitter then recorded back-to-back kills to break a 23-23 tie and give the Eagles an all-important first set. The Eagles have never lost an opening set in MAC Freedom play.
The No. 9 Eagles (20-3, 5-0 MAC Freedom) jumped to a 9-2 lead in the second set. The youthful Devils won several extended rallies with scrappy defense. They cut the deficit to 10-7 before the Eagles answered with a 7-2 scoring run to go up 17-9. Weigel again was instrumental in closing out the set. She scored three of the last six points and the Eagles claimed the second set 25-14. Weigel recorded six of her match-high 17 kills in the second set. She hit .432 in the match.
In the third and what would prove to be the final set, Eastern had to fight off an early offensive outburst by the Devils but managed to pull away. The Eagles cruised to a 25-10 third set win. Eastern hit .308 and tallied 20 kills in their most dominant set of the evening. Their defense held the Devils to a .000 hitting percentage in the final set.
Stephanie Elechko joined Weigel in double figure kills with 13.
Rylie Haas led the Eastern defense with 20 digs, and
Rikki Schlager tallied 39 assists.
The Eagles have a tough weekend in front of them. They will compete in the Calvin College Tournament on Friday and Saturday. Eastern will play No. 18 Clarkson University on Friday Oct. 16th at 2 PM, No . 13 Hope College on Saturday at 10AM, and No. 5 Calvin College at 2 PM Saturday afternoon.
