FREDERICKSBURG, Va.—Eastern Volleyball fell in four sets on Friday afternoon in a battle of two top-25 teams.
The Eagles, ranked No. 11 in the country, were upset by No. 19 Christopher Newport University. The Eagles took the first set 25-22, but the Captains claimed the next three sets 25-16, 25-20, 25-14.
The Captains more than doubled the Eagles' hitting percentage, .319 to .145 and also posted 10 total team blocks to the Eagles' two blocks.
Eastern had two players with nine kills, Alicia Weigel and Lauren Sproles, and Stephanie Elechko and Erin Hillman each recorded eight kills.
Setter Rikki Schlager, who missed the last two games with an injury, returned to the lineup on Friday and dished out 35 assists.
The Eagles struggled to find an answer for CNU's Hannah Miller. Miller hit .528 for the match with 19 kills and no errors.
Eastern returns to the court at 8 p.m. for a match against the host team, University of Mary Washington. The Eagles will attempt to earn Coach Birtwistle's 600th career victory then.
