Williams Pitches Shutout In Softball Split

GLENSIDE, Pa.--Eastern Softball split Tuesday afternoon's doubleheader with Arcadia University, dropping game one 3-2 but taking game two 3-0.

Eastern freshman Haleigh Williams pitched the complete game shutout in game two, scattering six hits, walking two and striking out one.

With the score 0-0 still, Williams evaded trouble in the bottom of the sixth inning when the Knights loaded the bases with two outs. Williams pitched a full count to the Knights' batter, Sarah Gunia, but got her to fly out to Michelle Stehman in center field to end the inning.

In the top of the seventh, the Eagles took advantage of two Arcadia errors to score the first runs of the game. After Karlee Kerchersky reached on an error, Kelsey Clever batter her to third and Stehman batted her home with a squeeze bunt. The Eagles scored two more runs on an error on the Arcadia shortstop that allowed Stehman and Clever to come home.

Williams then retired the Knights in order to close out the bottom of the seventh and keep her shutout intact.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Eastern out-hit Arcadia 8-6, but only mustered two runs scored. Stehman and Kasey Williams each went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the third with an RBI-single by Stehman to score Alyssa Welsh.

Welsh, pitching for the Eagles, gave up three runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning. Welsh was hit with the loss, allowing those three runs on six hits and two walks. Welsh struck out five batters.

Eastern got a run back in the fifth when Kasey Williams hit a bases-loaded single up the middle to score Clever. The one run was the only damage the Eagles were able to do in the inning as they left the bases loaded.

Eastern travels to Franklin & Marshall College on Thursday for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
