Early Lead Disappears In Softball Loss

SWARTHMORE, Pa.--Eastern Softball scored nine runs in the first two innings at Swarthmore College Friday evening, but squandered the early lead, falling 11-9.

The Eagles jumped to a 9-0 lead, playing as the home team at Swarthmore, scoring three in the first inning and six in the second. Karlee Kerchersky batted in two runs with a double in the first and Ashton Tomlinson followed with another double in the next at-bat to score Kerchersky.

The Swarthmore Garnet changed pitchers in the bottom of the second after Kelsey Clever made it a 4-0 Eastern lead with a double to score Alyssa Welsh.

The pitching change didn't help the Garnet as the Eagles scored five more runs in the inning. Karlee Kerchersky had an RBI single, Emily Houck and Ashton Tomlinson had RBI doubles, and Kasey Williams knocked in two runs with a double to left center.

Eastern's Alyssa Welsh went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles. Kerchersky, Clever, Williams, Houck and Tomlinson each had two hits and at least one RBI.

The Garnet chipped away at the Eagles lead, scoring three runs off of Eagles' pitcher Tomlinson in the third. Tomlinson took the no-decision, allowing three runs, one earned over 4.1 innings. She walked none and struck out four.

The Garnet scored three runs in the fifth on a home run, four more in the sixth to take the lead and then an insurance run in the seventh. Haleigh Williams took the loss, but received no run support. The Eagles left two runners on base in the fifth and left the bases loaded in the sixth. Down by two in the seventh, the Eagles were retired in order to end the game.

Eastern takes the field Saturday at noon against King's College in an important conference doubleheader.
