Softball Splits Day Three Down South

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.--Eastern Softball finished a rainy Wednesday of competition on both the winning and losing sides of mercy-rule games.

Eastern started the day with an 11-2 beatdown of Iowa Wesleyan, but in the second game of the day fell 14-4 to the Cardinal Stritch Wolves.

Eastern lead-off hitter Michelle Stehman batted 6-for-6 with a walk over the course of both games. Freshman catcher Karlee Kerchersky batted 4-for-6 and crushed the Eagles' first home run this season.


Game One: Eastern 11, Iowa Wesleyan 2 (5 inn.)

Box Score

Eastern pitcher Kristen Waters earned the win against Iowa Wesleyan, striking out two batters while walking three and allowing four hits and two runs.

The Eagles picked up nine hits in the win, with all nine hits coming from three players--Stehman, Kasey Williams and Kerchersky. The Eagles scored four runs in the first, three in the second, one in the third and three in the fifth.

Kerchersky hit the Eagles' first home run of the year, leading off the fifth inning with a shot over the fence in right center.

Williams crushed an RBI ground-rule double through the right-field fence in the first inning and added two RBIs in the fifth with a single to center field.


Game Two: Cardinal Stritch 14, Eastern 4 (6 inn.)

Box Score

Eastern picked up eight hits against the Stritch Wolves, but allowed 14 hits in the loss. Stritch's leadoff hitter Gabi Palacios led the team with three hits and four RBIs. Palacios scored on the first play of the game with a leadoff triple and an Eastern error, setting the tone for the Stritch Wolves the rest of the game.

Eastern's Stehman reached base in all four appearances, batting 3-for-3 with a walk. Erica Pyla-Gibson batted 2-for-3. Ashton Tomlinson, Melinda Kreimer, Kelsey Clever and Karlee Kerchersky each recorded a hit.

Eagles' pitcher Alyssa Welsh pitched four innings and was tabbed with the loss. Waters threw two innings of relief.
