Baseball Falls In Season Opener

FREDERICKSBURG, Va.--Eastern Baseball finally had its first opportunity to play on grass this year when they played against the University of Mary Washington Eagles on Saturday.

Mary Washington already had five games under its belt entering Saturday's doubleheader. A big inning in each game hurt Eastern and they dropped both games of the doubleheader, 11-7 and 8-0.

(While NCAA Division III doubleheaders are normally seven innings, Eastern and Mary Washington agreed to play nine innings each game on Saturday.)

Game One, Mary Wash. 12, Eastern 7

Box Score

Andrew Check and Joe Grato had a multi-hit game for Eastern, going 2-for-5 and 2-for-4, respectively.

After falling behind by two runs, Eastern tied the game in the second when left fielder Andrew DiFerdinando smacked a 2-RBI double. Eastern scored another run in the inning on an RBI groundout by Brendan Spall.

Check led off the third with a triple and scored when the next batter, Tyler Orr, lofted a sacrifice fly to right field. Check picked up an RBI-single in the top of the 4th and Easterm scored three runs in the inning to take a 7-2 lead.

However, Mary Washington responded for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth. Eastern committed two errors in the inning and Mary Washington picked up six hits.

Mary Washington added three more runs in the eighth and shutout Eastern over the game's final five innings.

Lucas Bremerman was tabbed with the loss (0-1). He went 4.1 innings, allowing six hits and seven runs, only three earned. He struck out one batter and walked none. Ryan Kehr and Ben Melendez pitched in relief.
