Men's Basketball Shoots Lights Out In 2nd Half; Can't Complete Comeback

Box Score

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.—Eastern Men's Basketball lit up the scoreboard in the second half of Thursday's game against King's College with 62 points, but even with that offensive output, the Eagles still fell by a final score of 87-83.

Eastern entered halftime down 42-21 but exploded in the second half, shooting 63.6 percent (7-for-11) from 3-point range and 70 percent from the floor (21-for-30).

Junior guard Anthony Parenti led the Eagles with 19 points on 6-for-9 shooting and scored 17 of those points in the second half.

The Eagles had six players score in double-digits. Jimmie Willis scored 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting, Malcolm Garrison added 13 points, Shaquan Turk and Austin Carroll each contributed 11 points, and Jordan Diggs finished with 10 points. Diggs also had seven rebounds and six assists.

The Eagles started making a run with nine minutes left in the game with Parenti sinking a 3-pointer. Parenti capped the 13-0 run with another trey with 5:10 to go to pull Eastern within five points, 64-59.

King's stretched the lead back to 10 points with 2:01, but the Eagles stayed in it and tried to trade King's free throws for their own 3-pointers. Parenti, Willis and Carroll hit important treys in the game's final minute to bring Eastern within two, 83-81 with 12 seconds to go.

After King's split their free throws on the next possession, Parenti brought Eastern within one with six seconds left. King's Joe Caffrey came through after Eastern had to foul and hit both of his free throws on the other end, giving King's the 86-83 lead.

The Monarchs then fouled Shaquan Turk about 30 feet from the basket. Turk tried to get a shot off while he was being fouled, but the officials called the foul on the floor, awarding Turk only two free throws. Turk missed the first and had to intentionally miss the second, but King's took the rebound and held on for the win.

King's made 34 of their 47 free throws, including 15-of-22 in the game's final two minutes. Caffrey led the Monarchs with 21 points. Freshman Dan Rutecki added 20 for King's.

Eastern plays at Delaware Valley College at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
