Women's Lacrosse Opens With Convincing Win

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.-- Eastern University Women's Lacrosse jumped out to an early lead and never looked back en route to a season-opening 21-4 win over the visiting Gwynedd-Mercy University Griffins. Three Eastern players scored four goals as the Eagles (1-0) converted 21-of-37 shots.

Junior captain Sara Blaylock opened the scoring in the third minute on a strong dodge, but the Griffins answered in transition only a few seconds later. Eastern strung together six straight tallies to grad a 7-1 lead and command of the game. Caleigh Falco scored three of her four goals in the critical early stretch. Shannon Wilcox scored two of her four in that stretch and first-year attack Anna Charlebois had a goal and an assist.

Ten of Eastern's 21 goals came from first year players. Falco led the way with four goals and two assists. Jenn McKelvie and Charlebois had 2 goals and an assist and Kelsie Andrews scored twice.

The Griffins briefly stopped the Eastern run with a free position goal from Danae Perrymond before Falco, McKelvie, and Charlebois answered. The Eagles boosted their advantage to 15-3 at the break.

Head coach Camrin Azzarano was pleased with her team's work on the draw control circle in the first half. The Eagles had a 13-6 edge in draw controls in the first half. Blaylock finished the game with four goals and seven draw controls and junior defender Ariana Borreginne gathered three draw controls.

Cortney Andes made four stops and picked up the win in goal. Megan McReynolds played the final twelve minutes in the cage and stopped the only shot she faced. Amy Powell scored twice for the Griffins (0-1).

The Eagles return to action on Wednesday afternoon at home against Albright College.
