Men's Basketball Loses Shootout With Bears

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.--Eastern University Men's Basketball led by as many as 14 points in Wednesday night's fast-paced shootout, but couldn't keep pace with the Ursinus College Bears in the final five minutes.

Ursinus shot 63.6 percent from the floor en route to a 100-92 win, the first of the year for the Bears. The Eagles made 50 percent of their shots in the first half, but cooled significantly in the second half down to 25.7 percent. Eastern held a one-point lead with 6:39 to go after back-to-back deep 3-pointers by Austin James. Ursinus, however, reclaimed the lead with 4:41 remaining and held it the rest of the game.

Eastern sophomore swingman Shaquan Turk netted a game-high 25 points. Turk scored 13 points from the floor and then went 12-for-13 from the free-throw line. He also collected seven rebounds.

Tarek Hamzeh shot an even 50 percent from downtown (6-for-12) and overall (7-for-14) to finish with a career-high 20 points. Senior Anthony Parenti knocked down 5-of-8 attempts with three 3-pointers, scoring 16 points in 19 minutes of play. Parenti also had four of the Eagles' 16 steals. Eastern forced 26 Ursinus turnovers.

James added 12 points for the Eagles on four 3-pointers.

Eastern shot 15-for-44 from behind the 3-point arc, marking the second-most 3-point attempts in Middle Atlantic Conference history.
While the Eagles were relying on their outside shooting to carry them offensively, they struggled to get stops in the paint defensively. Ursinus forward Joseph LoStracco didn't miss, scoring 24 points on 11-of-11 shooting.Fellow big man Remi Janicot scored 23 points and had 12 rebounds. Ursinus cleaned-up in the rebound category, 48-21. 

The Eagles did have one of their best nights from the charity-strip in recent memory, hitting 21-of-22 free throws (95.5 percent). The last time they shot that well from the line was on Dec. 29, 2009 when they hit 22-of-23 free throws against US Merchant Marine.

Eastern also scored 90 points for the second time in as many games. Prior to Monday's 90 outburst against Bryn Athyn, the Eagles last scored 90 points in regulation on Dec. 8, 2011 at TCNJ.

Eastern (3-6) picks up play in 2015. They play Swarthmore College at the Roanoke College Invitiational Tournament on Jan. 2.
