ST. DAVIDS, Pa.--Eastern Field Hockey kicked off the 2013 season Friday by playing just about the toughest opponent possible as they hosted the No. 2 Montclair St. Red Hawks.
The No. 17 Eagles stayed within one goal of the Red Hawks through the first half, but the visitors pulled away with goals in the 43rd, 52nd, 58th, and 60th minutes.
The Red Hawks scored in the eighth minute of the game off a give-and-go after a penalty corner. The Eagles earned seven penalty corners of their own the rest of the first half, but were unable to score.
Eagles' goalie Kylie Jones kept the Red Hawks from scoring a second goal in the first half, when she made a diving save on a penalty stroke with two minutes left in the half.
The Eagles earned two penalty corners in the second half while Montclair earned eight more in the second half, scoring twice off of those.
Five freshmen saw field time in this opening game.
Eastern begins a four-game road swing starting with Elizabethtown College at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The Eagles do not play at home again until Sept. 18, when they face Alvernia.
