ST. DAVIDS, Pa,- Eastern University Softball scored 22 runs
in 11 innings to sweep Cairn in a non-league doubleheader. Janelle Fair
struck out 10 batters in an 8-0 win in the opener, and she homered
twice in a 14-0 romp in the nightcap.
Fair was nearly untouchable
early in game one. Eastern's career leader in wins and strikeouts struck
out seven of the first nine hitters she faced and did not allow a baserunner until the fourth inning. With two outs in the inning, she
walked a batter. She hit the next batter but was able to get out of the
jam with a strikeout. The Highlanders had singles in each of their final
innings, but the Eastern defense was solid, and the Eastern offense was
more than enough.
After not scoring in the first, Eastern plated a
pair in the second, a single run in the third, three in the fourth, and
two in the sixth to end the game. Katelyn Donald had three hits and
three RBI's in the game. Paula Redmon knocked out three hits for her
first career multi-hit game. Fair was 2-for-4 with a double.
The
Eagles jumped out to a five run first in the second game. Fair drove in
three with her 14th career home run for the big blow in the inning. The
Eastern senior finishes the day in second place on both the career hits
and home runs. She moved into the third spot in career runs batted in.
Eastern
scored four more in the second and another five runs in the third. Fair
had a two-run shot to left in the inning. Eastern scored the final run
of the day in the bottom of the fourth before Redmon came on to pitch
for the final three outs.
Fair picks up her 41st and 42nd career
wins. She will play her final games as an Eagle this Saturday in
Eastern's season-ending doubleheader against Delaware Valley College.
