Softball Shut Out On Opening Day

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.--Eastern Softball took two losses to start the 2013 season Monday, falling to both Randolph College and PSU-Harrisburg by a score of 8-0 in each game.

This year's Eastern squad returned just four starters from last season's opening day and had to deal with some difficult pitching in their first action of the year. Randolph College entered the game with some playing experience already this season, having played eight games prior to Saturday's game with Eastern. The Eagles struck out 11 times against Randolph's pitching staff and mustered five hits and two walks. The Eagles loaded the bases with one out in the first, but were unable to bring the runners home.

Randolph posted three runs in the third, followed with four more in the fourth and added their eighth run in the sixth. In the first, second and fifth innings, Eagles' pitcher Janelle Fair cruised, allowing just three baserunners total in those innings. Fair struck out seven batters in the loss.

In the Eagles' second game of the day freshman Kasey Williams took the mound against PSU-Harrisburg. Williams struck out three batters in her first appearance.

The Eagles had one runner in scoring position against PSU-Harrisburg. In the fifth, Erica Chopas took a two-out hit-by-pitch to turn the lineup over and leadoff hitter Jessie Baker followed with her second walk of the game. Williams then blasted a ball to center that looked like it would put Eastern on the scoreboard. However, PSU-Harrisburg's center fielder tracked the ball down to end the inning. PSU-Harrisburg then scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.

The Eagles continue their spring break play Tuesday against York College and Cabrini College at 9 a.m and 11 a.m.
