PURCHASE, N.Y.- It did not happen the way that they wanted
it to, but Eastern University Softball wrapped up a berth in the
Freedom Conference Championships with one doubleheader remaining.
Unfortunately, the Eagles reached that goal on a day when they dropped a
pair of games at Manhattanville College.
The Eagles led 1-0
through two and a half innings of game one, after a Janelle Fair ground
out drove in Sam Terenzoni from third, but the Valiants scored four runs
on five hits in the bottom of the third to grab control of the game.
The Valiants pushed their edge to 6-2 with two more in the fifth.
Fair
doubled to lead off the sixth and Maggie McGowan drove her in with an
RBI single, but the rally died there and the Valiants held on for a 7-2
game one win. At that same time, less than 50 miles away in Madison
N.J., the Delaware Valley Aggies snuck past the host College at Florham
Devils 5-4 to officially eliminate FDU from the Freedom Championships.
With
a play-off berth intact, the Eagles scored the first four runs of game
two in support of McGowan. After she advanced to third on a McGowan,
Fair scored on Jaime Schwartz groundout in the fourth. Terenzoni hit a
two-run home run to center field in the fifth to increase the Eastern
lead to 3-0. McGowan scored the final Eagle run of the day on a Katelyn
Donald single in the sixth.
McGowan got two more outs after a
lead-off home run in the bottom of the sixth, but a pair of infield
errors gave the Valiant offense a couple extra outs in the inning, and
they made them count. By the time the smoke had cleared, Manhattanville
led 6-4.
The Eagles (18-15-1, 7-5 Freedom) have home doubleheaders
on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday this coming week in preparation
for post-season.
