The Blue Jays controlled the ball for most of the game, taking 40 shots in the game compared to the Eagles' 17 shots. Eagles' goalie Kristy Getsay obviously had her hands full in goal with all the shots coming her way. The senior goalie saved 13 balls from going in, a season high for her, and also half of her season total going into the game. In six games up to this point she had recorded 26 saves. This was also the first complete game that Getsay played this season. Coach Camrin Azzarano said that Getsay was fabulous in goal "She let loose, was having fun, and wasn't afraid." Azzarano noted that goalie coach Kim Campbell deserved credit for helping Getsay this week.
Turnovers halted the Eagles' attempts to keep the game close. The Eagles committed 22 turnovers compared to the Blue Jays' 12. Another troubling stat was the seven failed clears, which resulted in extra opportunities for the Blue Jays to get shots off.
Coach Azzarano also noted that offense, the Eagles need to focus on having all seven players working to attack. She also said that there were a few players who needed to be taking more shots.
In the first 12 minutes of the game, Eastern fell behind 5-0. Eastern's Jocelyn Paul then netted two goals in a four-minute span, the first assisted by Allie Fultz and the second on a free position shot. Elizabethtown earned a goal back with 8:46 to go in the first half, and then Eastern's Allie Gauthier scored her fourth goal of the year with 5:08 to go. Up 6-3 the Blue Jays scored seven straight goals, taking the ten-point lead which resulted in a running clock.
Allie Fultz halted the running clock with 20:13 to go in the game, to bring the score to 13-4. The Blue Jays then added two more goals. The Eagles rallied for three unanswered goals to end the game, but 15-7 was as close as they could get.
Now 1-6 to start the year and heading into the heart of conference play, Azzarano hopes the team will be able to maintaing a positive attitude against conference teams.
The Eagles play at Widener on Tuesday at 7 pm and at Wilkes on Thursday at 4:30 pm.
