Men's Basketball Held Off By Bears

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.--Eastern Men's Basketball outscored the Ursinus College Bears in the second half of Wednesday night's contest, but a slow first half start hampered the Eagles.

The Eagles faced a 57-34 deficit in the first half, outscored the Bears by seven in the second half, but lost 93-77 on Wednesday.

For the first time this season, the Eagles had five players score double-digits. Forward Jimmie Willis led the Eagles with 20 points, Tyler Stowers shot 4-for-4 from 3-point range and finished with 14, freshman Malcolm Garrison added 11 points and guards Anthony Parenti and Anthony Bertolino each added 10.

Ursinus' Malik Draper and Jon Ward scored 24 points and 21 points, respectively.

The Bears built their first half lead by shooting 58.3 percent from the floor. The Bears used their size to muscle in 26 points in the paint in the first half. The Eagles, on the other hand, shot 32.3 percent in the first half and scored just four points in the lane.

In the second half, Eastern forced 11 Ursinus turnovers and directly converted those into 15 points. The Eagles also pounded the ball in the lane with more regularity, dropping 20 points in the paint and earning 14 free-throw attempts.

Eastern closed the 23-point halftime deficit to a seven-point gap with 12:02 remaining after a 3-pointer from Malcolm Garrison. With 9:51 to go, the Eagles picked up their 10th team foul (to Ursinus' second team foul). While the Eagles picked up just two more fouls the remainder of the game, their comeback hopes faded as the Bears regained a double-digit lead.

The Eagles resume play in 2013 with a Jan. 2 matchup at Johns Hopkins University.
