Eastern Tops Heidelberg In Four

HUNTINGDON, Pa.--Eastern Volleyball took care of Heidelberg University (Ohio) in four sets Friday evening in the first game of the "Wid Guisler Invitational Tournament" at Juniata College.

Eastern took the first two sets 25-21, 30-28, dropped the third set 15-25, and held on for the 25-21 fourth set win. Eastern improved to 21-4 this season while the Heidelberg Student Princes fell to 16-8.

Eastern's Katrina Pisch, Kearby Benak and Erin Hillman led the Eagles in kills with 13, 11, and 11, respectively.

Rachel Wenger and Lauren Sproles combined for 15 kills and freshman setter Rikki Schlager finished five kills, her highest total this season. Schlager passed for 36 assists while Amy Guarino added 10.

For just the fourth time this season, the Eagles hitting percentage was lower than their opponents. Eastern hit .196 for the match (57 kills, 25 errors, 163 attacks) while Heidelberg hit .218 (50 kills, 18 errors, 147 attacks).

Eastern edged Heidelberg in service aces nine to eight with Kelly Groff and Kearby Benak each serving three aces.

The Eagles trailed briefly in the first set, but after tying the game at 5-5, the Eagles never trailed the rest of the set. Lauren Sproles finished the first set 25-21 with one of her eight kills.

In the second set, Eastern again trailed early, but evened the score at 7-7 with an ace by Lauren Horst. Eastern did not trail again until Heidelberg took a 19-18 lead. Eastern reached set point, 25-24, with a Sproles kill, but Heidelberg forced Eastern to side-out and then took the lead. A few points later, tied 28-28, Sproles gave Eastern set point again, and this time Eastern completed the 30-28 win with a Benak ace.

The Eagles fell behind in the third set 1-6, and unlike the first two sets were unable to climb out of the hole. Heidelberg hit .344 in the third set, winning 25-15.

Eastern started on the right foot in the fourth set with a Rachel Wenger kill and never trailed the rest of the set, sealing the match with the 25-21 fourth set win.

Eastern, No. 23 nationally, plays No. 6 Emory University and No. 21 Juniata College on Saturday at 1 p.m and 5 p.m.

Emory defeated Juniata 31-29, 25-23, 25-14, Friday evening.
