ST. DAVIDS, Pa.- Eight different players scored goals as
Eastern University Women's Soccer downed DeSales 8-0 for a homecoming
win.
Coming into the homecoming game following a tough 2-1 loss
to No. 1 Messiah, there was some concern that there would be a let down
for the home side. That letdown did not happen as Eastern grabbed
control of the play from the opening whistle.
The Eagles (6-4-2,
2-0 Freedom) grabbed a 1-0 lead on a corner kick goal in the eighth
minute. Ashley Graybill served a ball to the bask post that Tess
Beckwith volleyed back into the middle of the goal for Alli Inch to
touch home for her first goal of the year.
Graybill doubled the
Eastern lead with a free kick from the top of the box in the 30th
minute, and Amy Thomas scored her second of the year from Graybill eight
minutes later. Graybill won a tackle to Thomas about thirty yards from
goal. Thomas pushed the ball out of her feet and blistered a left-footed
rocket into the upper part of the net for the 3-0 edge.
Head Coach Dan Mouw was pleased with the first half goals.
"We
really wanted to be better on restarts," he said, "so it was really
good to see us score on a corner and a free kick, and Ashley's pas to
Amy was a great example of the instant transition we are looking to
develop."
Eastern held an 8-1 edge in shots and a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks at the break.
With
the homecoming crowd growing as the game progressed, the Eastern attack
grew in creativity and intensity after the half. the next tally of the
game, ironically, came on an Eastern goal kick. Alysia Goodman knocked
the ball over the DeSales back line for Charlotte Laurie. Laurie popped
an 18 yard shot over the onrushing goalkeeper for her 6th of the year.
Tess Beckwith made it 5-0 when Alli Inch feathered a pass in behind the Bulldog back line for another transition goal.
Emily Roquemore and Kelsey Doturich scored goals 57 seconds apart to
increase the Eagles lead to 7-0. Roquemore picked up her first
collegiate goal on corner kick in the 80th minute. The DeSales
goalkeeper put her hands on Carly Inch's serve, but the ball dropped in
front of the goal. Michelle Brown poked the ball to Kelsey Doutrcich who
touched the ball central for Roquemore who was behind the keeper but
with defenders still on the posts.
Doutrich headed home her sixth
of the year at the end of a beautiful sequence that started at
midfield. Emily Roquemore played a ball wide to Katie Ruth who slid a
one time pass into Alli Inch. Inch took two dribbles central before
slipping a pass wide to Brown. Doturich caught Brown's cross on the way
up and put in the upper right corner.
Marissa Monacelli headed in
an Amy Thomas corner for her first career tally. The Eagles enjoyed a
19-5 edge in shots. Goodman made two saves to secure her fifth shutout
of the year.
Eastern returns to action at Delaware Valley College on Wednesday.
