Eastern University Volleyball improved to 5-0 with a pair of three
set wins at the Haverford Invitational. The Eagles downed the host Fords
in the opener and were able to top Stevens Tech in their closest match
of the year in the second game. Eastern tied for the tournament title
with Frostburg State and Maria Horning and Courtney Reinhold were named
to the All-Tournament team.
In the morning game against the
hosts, the Eagles relied heavily on Reinhold in the attack. The junior
All-American finished with a match-best 17 kills with a .442 hitting
percentage. After the contest Reinhold acknowledged that solid passing
kept options open and allowed the outsides to hit against a single
block. Kearby Benak finished with nine kills and Rachel Wenger added
seven.
In addition to Reinhold's efficient hitting and solid
passing, the Eagles were able to establish dominance at the net with
seven blocks. After winning the first two sets 25-21, they jumped to a
16-4 lead in the final set and held on to win 25-9. The win over the
Centennial favorites could prove to be critical in the Regional
rankings.
The Eagles faced their stiffest challenge of the season
in the second match of the day against Stevens. Reinhold again paced the
attack with 16 kills, and Benak added 12. Maria Horning finished the
weekend with 139 assists.
The Ducks kept things close throughout,
but Eastern won the first set 25-22 and the second 27-25. Coach
Birtwistle's squad put away the Ducks 25-19 in the final set to keep
their unblemished record intact.
The Eagles will face more
challenges when they return to the court in Colorado next week. They
will face several Western powers including 5th ranked Colorado College.
