Eastern University Baseball entered this afternoon's contest against
the league-leading DeSales Bulldogs knowing that the smallest mistakes
could prove costly in a road game against a top team. The host Bulldogs
capitalized on their opportunities on the way to a 14-4 series-opening
win.
Eastern put runners on base in each of the first four
innings, and they were able to push across two runs in the second
inning and another two in the fourth. DeSales (14-9, 9-1 Freedom),
however, still led 6-4 going into the bottom of the fifth. DeSales then
sent 12 hitters to the dish in a seven run inning to take command of
the game. The Bulldogs had six hits in the critical inning, but the
Eastern defense also committed three errors. Mike Newland delivered the
big blow of the inning with a two run homer.
Nick Davouloas and
Ernie Stiegler allowed just a single run in three and a third innings
of relief work for the Eagles, but David Brinks held the Eastern
offense in check through seven before Alex Brown pitched the final two
innings for the hosts.
Scott Renauro finished 2-5 with a pair of RBIs. The sophomore shortstop has reached safely in all 19 games this season.
The
two teams will square off for a doubleheader in St. Davids tomorrow.
Eastern (10-9, 5-5 Freedom) seeks to stay alive in the playoff hunt,
and the Bulldogs will try to retain their spot at the top of the
league. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
