Volleyball Sweeps Devils

The 23rd ranked Eastern University volleyball team returned home on Wednesday night after two successful weeks on the road. The team continued their dominance in the Freedom Conference with a 3-0 win over the FDU-Florham Devils.

The Eagles struggled most of the night to find offensive consistency. Uncharacteristic attack errors and a few miscommunications on defense led to a back and forth battle in the opening set. Despite the lack of consistency at the start, the Eagles still pulled out a 25-22 win.

The two teams traded points through the beginning of the second set. Kelly Groff helped change the momentum of the critical second set. The freshman defensive specialist served consecutive aces spark the Eagles and bring the home crowd into the match. Christen Jansson put the exclamation point on the 25-19 second set as she pounded a slide into the back left corner for the final point.

The Devils jumped to a 4-0 lead early in the third set before the Eagles clawed their way back into the set off of consecutive kills by reigning AVCA National Player of the Week Courtney Reinhold. Strong service and good defense helped Eastern to roll to a 25-17 win in the final set.

Reinhold led the way for the Eagles with 18 kills. Rachel Wenger finished 11 kills. Maria Horning picked up four kills on four attempts and picked up 32 assists for an offense that hit .271. Senior outside hitter Bridget Carey and first year middle Heather Kauffman both hit over .400 for the match. Nikki Kummerer paced the Eastern defense with 13 digs.

The Eagles hit the road again on Saturday, October 3 as they head to Haverford College to play Haverford and Johns Hopkins. The first match against Johns Hopkins is scheduled for 2:00 PM, while the important regional match against #22 Haverford is slated to begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of the previous match.
