With three quality opponents on the schedule, the weekend in Hoboken looked like it might be a spot where the 24th ranked and once-beaten Eastern volleyball squad might slip up. The young Eagles refused to lose and swept through the second day of the 2009 Ducks Classic with a pair of 3-1 victories.
In the first match of the day, the Eagles beat a strong squad from SUNY-Cortland. Eastern hit .314 as a team and won 25-19. Cortland returned the favor in the second set, as they hit .314 as a team and won 25-19. The Eastern defense tightened up, and the Eagles rolled to 25-19 and 25-18 wins in the final two sets. Eastern held Cortland to .072 hitting percentage over the final two sets.
Three Eagles once again tallied double-digits kills. Courtney Reinhold again led the way with 14, while Rachel Wenger and Bridget Carey followed with 12 and 10 kills respectively. Maria Horning posted 36 assists in the first match. Nikki Kummerer recorded a match-high 20 digs to lead the Eastern defense.
Eastern would take on the host Ducks in the second match of the day, and it followed a similar pattern. The Eagles jumped out of the gate with a great offensive burst to take the opening set 25-21. Stevens, however, proceeded to knock the Eagles back on their heels with a 25-14 second set win. Eastern responded with 25-19 and 25-17 wins to take the match and sweep the tournament.
Wenger posted 14 kills and had her hand in two of Eastern's' seven team blocks. Reinhold picked up 11 kills. Horning passed out 34 assists and picked up 12 digs.
Horning and Reinhold earned spots on the 2009 Ducks Classic All-Tournament Team. Horning dished out a total of 120 assists in three matches to capture MVP honors. Reinhold, the other sophomore All-American on the squad, finished the weekend with 42 kills.
In addition to their time on the court, the Eastern team was able to spend time in Hoboken. They took a short trip to Carlo's City Hall Bake Shop, where the team was able to see the store featured on TLC's Cake Boss.
The Eagles will use the momentum gained over the weekend as they travel to King's and return to conference play at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, September 22.
