In the early going, things were going very well for the Eastern
University men's lacrosse team. The Eagles held a 3-1 lead over #14
Haverford College with just over three minutes to play in the first
period. The visiting Fords tied the score with two late goals in the
first quarter and pulled away with seven more unanswered goals in the
second as they ran to a 22-5 win in St. Davids.
Haverford took a 1-0 lead three and a half minutes into the game on
Max Hjelm's first goal of the day. The Eagles responded with three
straight goals and looked confident in the attack and on defense. Ben
O'Donnell knotted the score when he picked up a rebound and fired home
a shot from in close. O'Donnell then put the Eagles ahead on a nice
feed from behind the goal by Nick Mandia. Michael Ryan then gave the
Eagles a two-goal cushion on a drive from the left side.
Haverford took advantage of Eastern turnovers to tie the game before
the end of the period. Brian Fleishhacker connected for his first of
the day on a pass from David Lawrence. Hjelm tied the score as the
clock expired on another Fleishhacker pass.
Haverford then seized control of the game with dominating possession
in the second. The visitors won seven of eight face-offs and out-shot
the Eagles 16-7 as they built their lead to 10-3 at the half.
Ryan finally broke the Haverford scoring string with an unassisted
goal with four minutes left in the third, and Nick Mandia added an
unassisted tally late. Hjelm and Myles Monaghan finished with five
goals, and Fleishhacker had four goals and three assists to pace the
visitors.
Eastern (1-2) starts play in the MASCAC with a game at Messiah College on Saturday.
