Bekah Roland hit two free throws to give
Eastern a 70-67 lead with 1.3 seconds to play. Delaware Valley's Erin
Boyer drilled a 55 footer as time expired to force the game into
overtime. Despite playing without three fouled out starters in
overtime, the visitingAggies escaped with an 80-77 win. Bekah Roland led all scorers with a career-best 31 points.
The Eagles jumped to a 13 point halftime edge with solid first half shooting and greta
work on the boards. Roland had 16 at the break, and Hannah Tobin hit
all five of her field goal attempts for twelve. The Eagles also managed
to keep KimVennera away from the rim for much of the half. The junior
guard entered the game leading the Freedom Conference with over 20
points per game, but she went to the break with just eight. Eastern
shot 54% for the half and held a 29-14 edge on the glass.
Joelle DeCarlo opened the scoring with a deep three-pointer to stretch the Eastern lead to 16, but the Aggies then responded with a 24-8 run over next ten minutes to tie the game at 50-50. Vennera
imposed her will on the game as she scored twelve points in the run
despite picking up her fourth foul with twelve minutes to play.
The Aggies weren't finished as Vennera
tallied another six points in an 11-6 run to seize a 63-58 lead with
four minutes to play. Eastern renewed their defensive intensity and got
clutch baskets from Lizzie Wilson, Tobin and Roland to level the score
at 66-66 with one minute to play. Delaware Valley claimed a one point
lead whenVennera split a pair from the line after a foul with just two ticks left on the shot clock.
The
Eagles found Roland inside on the next possession, but her initial shot
rimmed out and she ripped a rebound free from a scrum under the basket.
Vennera bumped her on the
way up, and Roland gave the Eagles a one point lead with 15 seconds to
play. Just as important it seemed, theAggies would have to find someone to make a big play with their leading scorer out of the game.
Del
Val got a shot up against good pressure and Roland pulled down another
rebound. The first year forward dribbled out of pressure and was fouled
with 1.3 on the clock. She calmly sunk both free throws to give the
Eagles a lead that seemed safe. TheAggies took a timeout. Boyer took
the inbound pass on the run near the foul line, took one fast dribble
and hoisted a prayer from ten feet short of half court. Her shot went
through without touching any rim at all and hung the net with no time
on the clock.
Freshman guard Brittney Zimmerman was the difference in overtime for the Aggies. She hit all six of her free throw attempts and registered an assist as the Aggies took the lead halfway through and held it to the finish. Vennera lead the Aggies
with 27 points and eight rebounds. Zimmerman was the only other Del Val
player in double figures. She finished 9-10 from the line and just
missed a triple double with 18 points, ten rebounds and seven assists.
Roland
added a game-high 14 rebounds as she connected on 14-15 from the foul
line. Tobin finished with 18 points and eight boards, and Lizzie Wilson
finished with eleven points, twelve assists and six rebounds.
