The bad weather was supposed to come sometime in the second half. The Eastern University field hockey team raced the storm and jumped to a 6-0 halftime advantage over Gwynedd-Mercy College on their way to their third consecutive shutout win to start the year.
First-year midfielder Christin Haas led the scoring for the Eagles with a three goal and three assist effort of the bench.Kim Campbell added two goals and two assists as the teams played much of the second half in a steady rain.
It appeared as though the Eagles had taken a lead in the fifth minute of the match, but a circle violation nullified the goal. Undaunted, the Eastern attack continued to pressure the Griffin goal. Haas entered the game in the seventh minute of play and made her presence felt immediately when she slammed in a Campbell pass for her first collegiate goal.
Campbell added her first of the day and fourth of the year less than three minutes later when she flicked a Sarah Garber shot over the goalies outstretched arms and into the top of the cage. Yvonne Herbster scored her second goal of the year just minutes later on a nice pass from Haas.
The Eagles put together another burst of goals just after the midway point in the half as Haas scored from Olivia Derr to make it 4-0, took an unassisted effort to make it 5-0, and set up fellow freshman Caitlin Mcgann with just over 13 minutes to play in the first.
The Eagles fired 11 first period shots to a single shot from the Griffins and had a 6-2 edge in penalty corners. Coach Azzarano was very pleased with the way her team came out saying, "With the weather being what it was, we felt we needed to get a quick start. Christin did a great job providing us with a spark today."
Eastern owned an 11-0 advantage in penalty corners in the second period and were able to capitalize on three of them for the final margin. Five and a half minutes in Lindsay Moyer finished her fourth goal of the year at the end of a four pass sequence. Carrie Kline earned the assist. Sarah Garber redirected a Campbell shot seven minutes later to lift the Eastern edge to 8-0, and Campbell put in her second of the day on a double assist from Haas and Kristin Brownett.Â
At the break, Azzarano made a point to her team to capitalize on the corner opportunities. In 2007, the Eagles beat Gwynedd-Mercy 4-2 in a battle of PAC Playoff teams.Â
Eastern returns to action, weather permitting, on Tuesday afternoon, when the Eagles host Messiah College.
