late six
point deficit
to seize a 61-58 win at the College of Notre Dame. Joelle DeCarlo led the Eagles with 19 points and ten rebounds.
The Gators, who won the earlier meeting of the year between the two teams, jumped to an early lead and held a three point advantage at the break. Senior guard Mandy Kuiken, who did not play in the first meeting between the two teams, led the Eagles with eight points at the break.
More importantly, Kuiken led a guard corps that surrendered just three first half turnovers. In the game in St. David's, the Notre Dame press harassed the Eagles into multiple giveaways as they built a 27 pont lead early in the second half. The Eagles' ability to neutralize the Gator press proved to be a key to the win.
Eastern kept the game close throughout the second half and used a late 11-2 run to overcome a 52-46 deficit. Eastern shot 44% from the floor in the second half including 13-22 from inside the arc. When the Eastern squad was able to work the ball for quality shots, they converted as well as they have all year. Hannah Tobin scored ten of her 18 points in the second half. She finished with nine rebounds as well.
DeCarlo and Tobin were joined in double figures by Shaneen Brown with ten points.
The Eagles will look to continue their winning ways when they return home to host Marywood in a 1:00 pm game on Saturday.
