Eastern University Men's Soccer needed a win Saturday afternoon. At 2-2-1 in Freedom Conference play going into Saturday's action, the Eagles needed to earn points against Manhattanville College. The red-hot Valiants scored four goals in a fifteen minute period in the second half to erase a 1-0 Eastern lead and emerge with their fifth straight win.
With intermittent downpours throughout the game, Eastern controlled much of the play early and held a 6-2 advantage in shots at the half. For all their early possession, the Eagles were unable to find the back of the net as Manhattanville's Jerry Teller made a trio of first half saves.
Eastern continued to control play coming out of the break and their domination of the ball paid dividends in the 55th minute as Ryan Castle played a brilliant ball into space. Phil Mantua ran onto the ball and cracked his second goal of the season. The Eastern crowd had barely stopped celebrating when the Valiants struck back. Sebastion Chica buried a ball from Keston George in the 56th minute. In the 60th minute, Manhattanville struck again on a goal from Ricky Broderson.
Eastern seemed to regroup momentarily, but the Valiants finished goals in the 69th and 70th minutes to take the game. The loss puts the Eagles in a playoff type situation for the next two regular season games. At 2-3-1 in the league, the Eagles will need to earn wins at DeSales and Misericordia to have a chance to compete in the post-season.
Eastern travels to DeSales for a 3:00 pm game on Tuesday afternoon.
