Eastern University Field Hockey traveled to Gwynedd-Mercy College for an early-season PAC contest with post-season implications. The Eagles fell behind early, but emerged with a 4-2 win.
After falling behind 1-0 in the opening minutes, Eastern senior midfielder Stephanie Moyer ripped a rebound from the top of the circle to tie the game for the Eagles with 23 minutes remaining in the half. Thirteen minutes later, the Eagles took advantage of a penalty corner to take the lead in the match. Senior Ellen Hivner finished a pass from Olivia Derr.
The Griffins tied up the match on a controversial goal just four minutes later. Coach Azzarano said of the play, "We had to bounce back and overcome a tough decision, and we were able to do it." Amanda Reppert got credit for the goal for Gwynedd-Mercy.
With the score level at halftime, the defending PAC champions resolved themselves to earning a result in the second half, and the Moyer sisters were on the end of a pair of goals to make sure that the result stuck. Lindsay put away her sixth goal of the year eleven minutes in, and Stephanie finished a stroke for her second of the game five minutes later.
The Eagles finished the game with 16 shots to the Griffins 8 and 16 penalty corners to Gwynedd's four. Azzarano commented that she was pleased with Stephanie Moyer's two goals and her team's ability to get the win. She said, "We are seeing improvement in areas, and we need to keep working, but I am pleased that we were able to win even when everything wasn't totally clicking."
The Eagles return to action Saturday in a 12:00 pm home rematch of the last two PAC championship matches against Alvernia College.
