Eastern University Field Hockey traveled to Ursinus College to take on the 2006 National Champion Bears in an early-season test. The hosts graduated several seniors from the championship squad, but the Eagles knew that the game would serve as a tough test. The Eagles showed some flurries, but fell 4-1 to the champs on the slick turf in Collegeville.
After a good start with lots of positive action for the Eagles, the Bears began to take control and put pressure on the Eagle cage. That pressure resulted in the first goal of the game with just less than ten minutes left in the opening half. The Bears scored again five minutes later to take a 2-0 advantage into the half.
The game is the second of the year on Astroturf for the Eagles, and the hosts continued to press at the outset of the second half. Fifteen minutes in, the Bears stretched their lead on a goal from the top of the circle.
The Eagles responded moments later with a beautiful penalty corner goal from Hope Donnelly. The first year midfielder finished the corner off a double assist from Lindsay Moyer and Stephanie Moyer.
The Bears scored their final tally of the game five minutes later on a rebound. Kelly Garland made fifteen saves in goal for the Eagles. Coach Azzarano said of her team's performance, "We knew going in that we would have to play very well to beat them, and they are a very good team, but we made some critical mistakes that we will try to fix as we go forward. We need these games to keep getting better."
The Eagles return to action Saturday at Immaculata.
