it seemed that the Eagles had solved their Monday night blues. The combination of a struggling Eastern offensde and 60% shooting in the first half from the Mighty Macs meant that the Eagles winning streak would end at five. The playoff bound Eagles will not see another Monday night game until December of 2007.
The Mighty Macs quickly jumped to a 14-7 lead as Kyle Finklea hit nine points in the opening five minutes.. The Eagles were able to cut the deficit to three points at 14-11 on consecutive baskets from
Mike Johnson, but would get no closer. Johnson led all scorers on the night with 21 points, but the rest of the Eastern line-up shot just 13 of 36. The Mighty Macs extended their lead to 11 just before half when Dan Lepone hit a 16 footer from the right wing with three seconds left. Eastern guard
Brent Williams gave the Eagles a ray of hope when his one-handed three-quarter court toss banked in as time expired. That shot, and
David Volpe's game-opening three-pointer, would be the only two long range makes of the day for the Eagles.
The Mighty Macs, meanwhile missed just 11 shots in the opening frame and were able to grab four offensive rebounds as they built a 41-33 halftime edge. An inside bucket from Johnson to start the half cut the Immacualta lead to six, but two baskets from Jason Hymen around a Robert Jones make put the hosts up 12. Jones led Immaculata with 19 points, and Hymen chipped in with 17. Finklea finished the evening with 16.
In addition to shooting 59% from the field for the game, Immaculata limited Eastern to five offensive rebounds and forced 23 turnovers in the win.
Matt Malloy joined Johnson in double figures with 14 points. The Eagles will return to action Wednesday night with their final regualar season game against PAC Leading Alvernia College. Tonight's loss, coupled with Gwynedd-Mercy's win at Wesley, eliminates the Eagles from a chance at the second seed in the PAC tournament. A win Wednesday, coupled with a Neumann win over Immacualta, would put the Eagles alone in third. Should Immaculata win at Neumann on Thursday, the Mighty Macs would finish third, and the Eagles would host Neumann in the first round on Saturday.
