to open the season against the host Garnet. Things started well for the Eagles as they jumped to a 5-0 lead on consecutive baskets from sophomore guard Joelle DeCarlo, but the Garnet responded with a 20-0 run over the next eight minutes to take command of the season opener.
The Eagles, who will take a while to develop an identity with a new coach and the graduation of 2006-07 leading scorer Raya Shores,are looking forward to the challenge of the year, but on the night were unable to match up with Swarthmore. The Eagles shot just 30% for the afternoon and turned the ball over against the more experienced Swarthmore side.
Swarthmore jumped to a 39-15 first half lead, and out-scored the Eagles 48-32 in the second half. Eastern was led by DeCarlo and first year forward Shanelle Timothy who each picked up 11 points on the afternoon. Timothy led the Eagles with nine rebounds.
The Eagles, who played without sophomore Hannah Tobin, played 14 players with just two upperclassmen seeing time in the game.
Eastern returns to action on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm against Heidelberg College at Swarthmore.
