Men's Basketball Wins in Shootout

Eastern Men's Baskeball had five players score in double figures, but still needed three free throws in the last eight seconds to down host Westminster College in the consolation game of the Buzz Ridl Classic.

The Eagles forged their biggest lead of a back and forth first half when All-tournament team representative Ty Coleman scored 6 straight Eastern points to give the Eagles a 40-36 lead with three and a half minutes remaining. Coleman would finish the game with 13 points on 6-8 shooting. The host Titans responded with a 10-0 run going into the half to secure a 46-40 halftime advantage.

David Volpe and Coleman each had a eight points at the break, and the Eagles shot a very solid 50% for the first half. The Titans shot 47% for the half overall, but made a stunning 10-15 from three point range. Going into the half, the Eastern staff knew that their team would have to do a better job defending the arc in the second half.

The Eagles responded with an up-tempo second half. Danny Miller, who finished with a team-high 20 on the afternoon scored 14 points in the second half including a resounding dunk with three and a half minutes remaining to put the Eagles up eight. The Titans, who shot just 5-20 from behind the arc in the second half hit a pair of threes and four free throws in a 10-2 run to tie the game at 87.

The Eagles brought the ball into play with thirty seconds to play and were looking for a final scoring chance to secure the win. A Westminster foul sent Jason Reels to the line with eight seconds to play. Reels finished the day with 12 points and nine rebounds, but secured his biggest point and his biggest rebound in the close of the game. The Sophomore guard hit the first free throw and then grabbed the rebound of his own miss to give the Eagles the ball up 88-87.

Senior guard Brent Williams knocked down a pair of free throws to close out the game for the Eagles. The Eastern coaching staff was generally pleased with the performance of their squad in the second game of the weekend. "David [Volpe] hit some huge shots in the second half for us, and Ty and Danny brought really good scoring punch off the bench for us. We will need to work on finishing the first half."

Also worth noting was a 48-38 advantage on the boards for the Eagles. The Eastern guards were particularly effective on the glass with Volpe and Reels collecting nine each and Williams securing seven caroms.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 1-1 on the year. Eastern returns to action with a home game against Gwynedd-Mercy College after the Thanksgiving break.
