The Yard

In 2016, Eastern's historic baseball field began to be officially referred to as The Yard. Ryan Kehr pitched the Eagles to a 10-2 MAC Freedom win over Wilkes in the first game where The Yard was listed in the box score.

Nestled in a natural amphitheater at the base of Gallup Hall in the middle of campus, The Yard provides a great place to play and watch baseball. A great majority of Eastern students returning to their residence halls from classes will walk by the field and Eastern's Fitness Center is less than 100 yards away.

While maintaining its historic character, the facility has undergone tremendous upgrades over the years.

After the 2013 season, a large manually operated scoreboard was installed in in left field. Before the start of the 2016 season, The geometry of the Yard changed slightly as an 8-foot wooden fence replaced the chain link fence that had previously circled the outfield. The fence in right-center, the deepest part of The Yard, was set at six feet to give better sight lines of campus and the home bullpen was moved from the right-field line to behind the fence in right.

Before the 2019 season, The Yard got another significant upgrade. A new netting system replaced the 1950's era backstop, and a foul pop-up to the catcher was for the first time a way to make an out. The system, with high poles and Kevlar-based netting still protects the windows of Gallop Hall but allows for a clear view of the batter and field from all angles. It also increased the space behind home plate and the turning radius around third for players trying to score from second on a single. During the upgrade, the infield was regraded and new sod installed. Drainage was also added to dugout areas.

Batting cages were installed behind the visitor bullpen up the left-field line in 2021.

There is limited bleacher seating available. Most fans elect to watch from the Gallup porches or bring comfortable chairs and/or spread out a blanket on the hill up the first base line.Â
